Put your jewellery on last — after fragrance, cosmetics and hair products — and take it off first. Avoid contact with lotions, perfumes and cleaning agents, which dull brilliance over time. Remove pieces before swimming, bathing or exercising.
Soak in a bowl of warm water with a drop of mild dish soap for 20 minutes. Gently brush behind the stones with a soft baby toothbrush to release trapped residue, rinse in clean water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
Emeralds, rubies, sapphires and pearls are more delicate. Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth only — never soak pearls or emeralds. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals, which can damage natural inclusions and treatments.
18kt gold is enduring but soft. Buff gently with a dedicated gold-polishing cloth to restore lustre. Remove rings when handling abrasive surfaces, and avoid chlorine, which weakens gold alloys over time.
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratching. Keep away from heat and direct sunlight. Chains fasten best when clasped and laid flat to avoid tangling and kinks.
Carry jewellery in a padded travel case in your hand luggage — never checked. Use individual compartments, thread chains through a straw to prevent knots, and keep an inventory of what you're travelling with.

We advise against it — soaps and shampoos leave a film that dulls stones and metal over time.
